A Faith That Grows Exceedingly

Paul uses an unusual word here — he says he’s “bound” to thank God for this church, as though it were a debt he owed rather than an optional kindness. And the reason is specific: their faith was growing exceedingly, and it was growing precisely because it was being tested. Untested faith doesn’t grow; it just sits there, unexercised. This congregation was under real persecution and real affliction, and instead of that pressure crushing their faith, it was strengthening it — along with a love for one another that Paul says was abounding, overflowing past what was strictly required.

Paul then makes a striking claim about what that endurance means: it’s “manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God,” proof that they’ll be counted worthy of the coming kingdom — not because their suffering earns entry, but because it demonstrates the reality of the faith God already gave them by grace. He closes the passage the way he opens most of his letters — in prayer, asking that God would count them worthy of His calling and that Christ’s name would be glorified in them. Not that they could make His name more glorious than it already is, but that their faithful lives would bring attention to a glory that was already there.
