The Love of the Truth

Paul gives the Thessalonians a third reason they can’t already be in the Day of the Lord: a restraining force is currently holding back a coming wave of lawlessness, and that restrainer has to be removed first. He describes this power in both impersonal terms (a force) and personal terms (a person) — strong enough to hold back evil already at work in the world, but destined to step aside at the appointed time. When that happens, a lawless figure will be revealed, empowered by deception, working counterfeit signs and wonders convincing enough to fool those who are already primed to be deceived.

What’s striking is Paul’s explanation for why that deception works on some people and not others. It’s not primarily about intelligence or gullibility. It’s about love — specifically, the absence of it: “because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” Truth isn’t just information to be believed intellectually; it’s something to be loved, treasured, held onto because it’s worth holding onto. People who never came to love the truth become exactly the kind of people a convincing lie can capture, because nothing in them was anchored against it in the first place.
