Grace and Peace from the God Who Gave Himself

Paul opens this letter differently than any other he wrote. There’s no thanksgiving, no warm word of commendation before he gets to business — because there’s no time to lose. But before the confrontation begins, he anchors everything in one sentence: Christ “gave Himself for our sins.” Not was given. Gave Himself — a voluntary, personal, total surrender to the Father’s will. Whatever correction is coming in the chapters ahead, it’s built on this foundation first: grace, freely given, at enormous cost to the Giver.

And that gift wasn’t only about where you go when you die. Paul says Christ died to “deliver us from this present evil age” — a rescue that starts now, in the actual world you’re living in this week, not just a ticket stamped for later. The letter that follows will spend six chapters defending that single truth against people trying to add conditions to it. But it starts here, with Paul unable to even finish his greeting without breaking into praise: “to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Before there’s a single word of argument, there’s worship.
