Turning Away So Soon

Paul is stunned — not angry first, but genuinely amazed. The word he uses for “turning away” is a military term for desertion, and it’s in a tense that means it’s happening right now, mid-retreat, voluntarily. These were people who had received Paul “as an angel of God” when he first brought them the gospel of grace. And within roughly a year, they’re abandoning it — not because the case against grace was compelling, but because a different message showed up wearing familiar religious clothing. Paul is careful to specify: it isn’t just a different version of the same gospel. It’s not a gospel at all. The moment works get added to grace, you don’t have a stricter gospel — you have a different message entirely.

Twice in two verses Paul pronounces the strongest word he has — “accursed” — on anyone who preaches a gospel other than the one of grace alone, even if it were Paul himself, even if it were an angel from heaven. That’s not rhetorical excess; it’s how seriously he takes the purity of this one thing. Then he asks the question underneath all religious compromise: “Do I now persuade men, or God? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.” Every time truth gets softened to keep people comfortable, that question is being answered the wrong way.
