Begun in the Spirit

Paul doesn’t open gently: “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?” He’s not suggesting they’ve literally been cursed — he’s using shock to underline just how baffling their reversal is. These are people who had received him “as an angel of God” and would have “plucked out their own eyes” for him, by his own account later in the letter. And now, after all of that, after Christ Himself had been vividly preached and portrayed among them as crucified, they’re turning back toward the law. Paul’s first question cuts to the root of it all: “Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” There’s only one honest answer. No one has ever received the Holy Spirit by keeping rules. He came the moment they believed.

That makes Paul’s next question almost devastating in its simplicity: if you started by faith, are you now foolish enough to think you finish by your own effort? “Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?” It’s the same error dressed up differently — not abandoning Christ outright, but quietly assuming that grace got you started and now performance has to take it the rest of the way. Paul’s closing question drives it home: the miracles God worked among them, did those come by law-keeping or by simply hearing and believing? The answer was obvious to them then. It should be just as obvious now, whenever the same subtle shift starts creeping into how you measure your own standing with God.
