Galatians 3:15–29 · NASB95
Key Verse
“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus…There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26, 28Paul makes a legal argument even a first-century reader would recognize instantly: once a covenant between two parties is confirmed, no third party gets to alter its terms later. God made an unconditional promise to Abraham centuries before the Law existed — Abraham was, quite literally, asleep when God confirmed it, passing alone between the sacrificial pieces while Abraham could only watch. The Law, arriving 430 years afterward, cannot retroactively change those terms or attach new conditions. It served a real but limited purpose — exposing sin, showing every person their need, functioning like a guardian whose job ends the moment the promised Seed, Christ, actually arrives.
And once He arrives, everything changes categorically. “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” — not merely servants under the Law anymore, but sons with full inheritance rights. Paul stacks the language deliberately: baptized into Christ, having “put on Christ” like new clothing, entering a relationship deeper than any earthly bond. And then comes one of the most radical sentences in the ancient world: no more distinction by nationality, social class, or gender — “you are all one in Christ Jesus.” The ground was level at the foot of the cross, and Paul insists it stays level in the church. If you belong to Christ, you belong to Abraham’s family and inherit everything the promise ever guaranteed — not because of who you are, but because of whose you are.
