Walk in the Spirit

Freedom, Paul insists, was never meant to be an excuse: “do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh.” The very fact he has to say that tells you something important — grace really does give a believer the freedom to sin, which is exactly why people accuse Free Grace teaching of being dangerous. But Paul’s answer isn’t to reattach the law as a safety rail. It’s to point to something more powerful: “through love, serve one another.” Real freedom isn’t freedom from all restraint — it’s freedom for something better than self-indulgence, freedom to actually love the people around you the way Christ loved you.

And the mechanism for that isn’t willpower or law — it’s simply this: “walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” The flesh and Spirit are in constant tension — “so that you do not do the things that you wish” — but victory was never meant to come from gritting your teeth against temptation. It comes from yielding, moment by moment, to the Spirit already living inside you. What that yielding produces isn’t a list of accomplishments but a fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control — a single harvest, growing naturally out of dependence rather than gritted-teeth effort. “Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” — not as a command to try harder, but an invitation to actually depend on Him, one step at a time.
