A New Creation

Paul takes the pen from his secretary and finishes the letter in his own large handwriting — one final, emphatic underline on everything he’s just argued. He strips away any remaining doubt about what’s actually driving the Judaizers: not conviction, but self-protection. They wanted “to make a good showing in the flesh” and to avoid persecution for the offense of the cross — because a gospel of grace alone, with nothing added, was guaranteed to provoke hostility from a world that wants some credit for its own salvation. Even they, Paul points out bluntly, didn’t actually keep the whole Law themselves. Their circumcision requirement was never really about obedience. It was about being able to boast in Gentile converts’ flesh.

Paul’s own boast is entirely different: “God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Not his credentials, not his suffering, not his converts — only the cross, the place where he met the Savior and the means by which the world was crucified to him and he to the world. And then the line that answers every question the letter has raised: “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.” Not a religion — a relationship. Not what you can do to bring God down to your level, but what He has already done to bring you up to His. Paul closes with the same word he opened with: grace. “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Six chapters of argument, correction, tenderness, and warning, and it all lands exactly where it began — grace, with nothing added, is enough.
