From Death Into Life

A man lies by the pool of Bethesda for thirty-eight years, waiting for a chance he can never quite reach in time. Jesus doesn’t wait for the water to stir. He simply asks, “Do you want to be made well?” and then commands, “Rise, take up your bed and walk” — on the Sabbath, deliberately. The healing is instant. The controversy is instant too. When the religious leaders confront Jesus for working on the Sabbath, He answers with a claim that changes the whole conversation: “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” Not a father. My Father. They understood exactly what He meant — He was calling Himself equal with God — and they wanted Him dead for it.

What follows is one of the most direct assurance statements in the entire Bible. Jesus says that whoever hears His word and believes has everlasting life, will not come into judgment, and has already passed from death into life — not will pass, has passed. It’s a completed transaction, stated in the past tense about your present standing. The Son has been given authority to give life and to judge, exactly as the Father has life in Himself. And Jesus points to multiple witnesses who confirm who He is — John the Baptist, His own works, the Father Himself, and even Moses, whose writings the religious leaders claimed to trust but refused to actually believe when it came to Him. The chapter ends with a haunting line: “If you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.” They had the Scriptures memorized and still missed the One the Scriptures were about.
