Rivers of Living Water

Even Jesus’s own brothers didn’t believe in Him at this point — they mockingly urge Him to go make a public spectacle of Himself at the feast, and He tells them plainly, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.” He was living entirely on the Father’s schedule, not anyone else’s pressure, not even family pressure. When He does go up to Jerusalem, quietly, He teaches in the temple with an authority that stuns people who know He never studied under any recognized rabbi. His answer to their surprise cuts to the heart of real spiritual understanding: “If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God.” Willingness to obey, not intellectual credentials, is what opens someone’s eyes to the truth.

Then, on the last and greatest day of the Feast of Tabernacles — the day the priests would pour out water at the altar in remembrance of God providing water in the wilderness — Jesus stands up in the middle of the crowd and makes an invitation as wide as it is simple: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” Anyone who believes in Him, John explains, will become a source of that same living water for others — a promise of the Holy Spirit, not yet given because Jesus hadn’t yet been glorified. The chapter ends in confusion and division: some say He’s the Prophet, some say He’s the Christ, some object that the Christ can’t come from Galilee, and the religious leaders send officers to arrest Him who come back empty-handed, saying only, “No man ever spoke like this Man.”
