Of Those You Gave Me, I Have Lost None

Jesus doesn’t wait to be found in the garden — He steps forward and asks the armed detachment, “Whom are you seeking?” When He answers “I am He” — the same words God spoke to Moses from the burning bush — the whole crowd falls backward to the ground. He isn’t being arrested against His will. He’s surrendering Himself on His own terms, and His very next words are about protecting His disciples: let these men go. John tells us why — so that Jesus’s own earlier promise would be kept word for word: of those the Father gave Him, He has lost none. That’s the same security He spoke of back in chapter 10 — “no one is able to snatch them out of My hand” — now proven true at the exact moment everything looks like it’s falling apart.

Peter draws a sword and Jesus tells him to put it away — “shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” This isn’t a man losing control of events; it’s a man walking deliberately into the one event He came to accomplish. Through the religious trial before Annas and Caiaphas, and then the political trial before Pilate, Jesus never once loses His composure or His clarity. He tells Pilate plainly, “My kingdom is not of this world,” and when Pilate presses further, Jesus says the whole reason He was born was to bear witness to the truth — “everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate’s reply — “What is truth?” — is asked to the very embodiment of the answer, standing right in front of him. Meanwhile Peter, warming himself at the wrong fire, denies Jesus twice before the chapter even ends.
