The Divine Program of Judgments
Scripture presents not one final judgment but a series of distinct divine judgments, each differing in time, subjects, basis, and result. Confusing these — particularly by merging the Bema Seat with the Great White Throne — produces serious theological error about the security of the believer and the nature of eternal punishment.38,12
| Judgment | Time | Subjects | Basis & Result |
|---|
| Sin at Calvary | Past — AD 33 | Christ as substitute | Once-for-all; no condemnation for believers (John 5:24; Rom 8:1; Heb 9:26) |
| Self-judgment | Present age | Believers | Ongoing self-examination to avoid divine discipline (1 Cor 11:31–32; Heb 12:5–11) |
| Bema Seat | After Rapture | Church-age believers | Works evaluated for rewards; not for condemnation (2 Cor 5:10; 1 Cor 3:12–15) |
| Living Israel | After 2nd Coming | Jewish survivors of Tribulation | Purged and refined; rebels removed; remnant enters Kingdom (Ezek 20:33–38) |
| Sheep & Goats | After 2nd Coming | Gentile survivors of Tribulation | Basis: treatment of Christ's "brethren." Sheep → Kingdom; Goats → eternal fire (Matt 25:31–46) |
| Fallen Angels & Satan | End of Millennium | Satan + fallen angels | Satan cast into Lake of Fire (Rev 20:10); angels judged (Jude 6; 1 Cor 6:3) |
| Great White Throne | End of Millennium | All unsaved of all ages | Works judged; all absent from Book of Life; Lake of Fire — the second death (Rev 20:11–15) |
A. Judgment of Sin at Calvary — Completed
The judicial judgment of the believer’s sin was fully discharged at the cross. Christ bore the penalty in the place of the guilty. The verdict for the one in Christ: no condemnation, ever.23
- John 5:24: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the one who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life”
- Rom 8:1: “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus”
- Heb 9:26: Christ appeared “to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” — once, completely, forever
B. Self-Judgment of Believers — Present Age
- 1 Cor 11:31–32: “if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world”
- Heb 12:5–11: divine discipline (paideia — child-training) is the corrective process God uses when self-judgment fails
- Ongoing self-examination and confession (1 John 1:9) maintains fellowship, not standing, with the Father
C. Bema Seat Judgment of Believers — After the Rapture
All Church-age believers must appear before the Judgment Seat (bema) of Christ to give account of their lives. This is not a judgment of salvation (which is eternally secure) but of stewardship — how they used what God entrusted to them.12,39,24
- 2 Cor 5:10: “we must all appear before the judgment seat (bema) of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body” — the bema was the raised platform in a Greek stadium where the judge awarded prizes to winners
- 1 Cor 3:12–15: works tested by fire — gold, silver, precious stones survive; wood, hay, stubble are consumed. “If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire”
- Five crowns mentioned in the NT: Incorruptible Crown (1 Cor 9:25), Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thess 2:19), Crown of Righteousness (2 Tim 4:8), Crown of Life (Rev 2:10), Crown of Glory (1 Pet 5:4)
- The awards are cast at Christ’s feet (Rev 4:10) — all glory returned to Him
NoteRyrie Study Bible note on 2 Cor 5:10: "The bema was not a criminal court but the platform on which the agonothetes (judge of the games) sat to evaluate and reward the athletes’ performance. No punishment is in view here — only loss of reward or gain of reward. The believer’s salvation is never in question."
D. Judgment of Living Israel — After the Second Coming
- After Christ returns, surviving Jews from the Tribulation are gathered for a divine “purging” (Ezek 20:33–38)36
- “Rebels” who refused to return to the LORD are removed and do not enter the Kingdom
- The believing remnant — those who mourned at the sight of Christ (Zech 12:10–12) and were covered by the New Covenant — enter the Millennial Kingdom as the nucleus of restored Israel
- This is the fulfillment of the New Covenant (Jer 31:31–34) and the Palestinian Covenant (Deut 30:3–6) in their fullest national application
E. Judgment of Living Gentiles — The Sheep and Goat Judgment (Matt 25:31–46)
Immediately following the Second Coming, Gentile survivors of the Tribulation are gathered for judgment. This is not the Great White Throne — it involves living mortal people who survive the Tribulation, not the resurrected dead.38
- The King “separates them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats” (Matt 25:32)
- Basis of judgment: treatment of “these brothers of Mine” during the Tribulation — most likely the 144,000 Jewish witnesses or Jewish believers who were proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom
- “Sheep” (righteous Gentiles): “Inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” — they enter the Millennium as mortals
- “Goat” Gentiles: “Go away into eternal punishment” — excluded from the Kingdom; cast into eternal fire
- Their works reflect their faith: they were believers who demonstrated saving faith by risking their lives to help God’s Jewish messengers
F. Judgment of Fallen Angels and Satan — End of the Millennium
- Satan is cast into the Lake of Fire where the Antichrist and False Prophet already are (Rev 20:10): “tormented day and night forever and ever”
- Fallen angels judged (2 Pet 2:4; Jude 6; 1 Cor 6:3 — believers will participate in this judgment)
- The abyss (Rev 20:3) held Satan for 1,000 years; the Lake of Fire is his eternal, final confinement
G. The Great White Throne Judgment — End of the Millennium (Rev 20:11–15)
The final judicial act of history. All unsaved of all ages stand before the omniscient God for their definitive verdict.38,15
- The present heavens and earth “fled away” from the face of the Judge — the present creation dissolves
- “Books” opened: the record of every thought, word, and deed — works are the basis of degree of punishment (not of salvation or damnation)
- The “Book of Life” opened: no name of any person standing there is found in it — their damnation is confirmed by absence
- All are judged “according to their deeds” (Rev 20:13) — the lost are judged by works to establish degree of punishment; salvation is not in view since none present are saved
- Death (physical death) and Hades (the realm of the dead) are themselves cast into the Lake of Fire — the second death
- “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:15)
